The price we have given for Chloride of Lime is based on a quotation of £10 a ton in zinc-lined cases f.o.b. Liverpool, given by Messrs. Brunner Mond and Company of Northwich, for a strength of 35%, but we could buy at the same rate f.o.b. Hamburg through Messrs. Howards and Sons and therefore probably somewhat less by dealing direct with a German Firm. We do not however possess the information necessary to compare the quality of supplies from either of these sources with that of the chemical at present obtained from Japan.

The price we give for Sulphuric Acid is based on a quotation from Messrs. Howards and Sons for "Acid Sulph: Commercial (C.U.V.)" packed in cases containing four two-gallon jars. We are informed that ten-gallon jars would be more expensive and also difficult, if not impossible, to ship from this country.

The details are as follows:-

9372 cases each containing 2 gallons @ 19/6.
Freight and Charges 13/3 per case.
Insurance on £1,950 @ 13/12/0 %.
Crown Agents' Commission 1% on £1,925

£761.14. 4
£249. 8. 0
£19. 5. 0
£1. 7
Total for 7,500 gallons..
£1,944. 8. 9

It will be seen that the cost of freight and insurance considerably exceeds the prime cost of the acid.

All the prices given are however necessarily rather uncertain as market prices and freight rates fluctuate and a trial order would seem to afford the only opportunity for instituting a comparison of actual quality and price.

I have etc.,
